His final Navy assignment was as Catapult and Arresting Gear Officer aboard USS Nimitz in Bremerton, Washington.

Mottino holds a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology with a focus in Athletic Training from Humboldt State University (now Cal Poly Humboldt). He completed United States Navy Flight Training and earned designations as Naval Aviator, Aviation Safety Officer, and Weapons and Tactics Instructor (WTI).

He was born in Lancaster, California, and raised in the Antelope Valley in a Catholic household. His father was an Air Force veteran who worked at Lockheed Martin’s Skunk Works. Mottino played center and outside linebacker at Paraclete High School and contributed to back-to-back CIF championships in football and golf. He began playing golf at age 11 and has maintained an 11 handicap for most of his life.

Mottino has spoken about the role of youth sports and mentorship in building discipline and leadership. He launched “Analog Evenings,” a vinyl listening initiative reflecting his interest in analog music experiences.
