William J. “Bill” Taverner is a leading figure in the field of sexuality education, serving as the Executive Director of the Center for Sex Education (CSE) and the editor-in-chief of the American Journal of Sexuality Education. With a career spanning over three decades, Taverner has authored and co-authored a wide range of influential educational resources, including prominent manuals like All Together Now: Teaching about Contraception and Safer Sex and Older, Wiser, Sexually Smarter.

Taverner’s professional journey began following his graduation from New York University, where he obtained a Master of Arts in Human Sexuality. He initially worked at Phoenix House, where he developed a comprehensive sexuality education program for individuals in recovery from substance abuse. His efforts included creating the Verbal Informed Sexual Consent Assessment Tool, aimed at assessing the capacity for informed sexual consent.

As an editor, Taverner has significantly contributed to academic discourse in sexuality education by overseeing the production of the eighth through tenth editions of Taking Sides: Clashing Views on Controversial Issues in Human Sexuality. His editorial work has extended to new editions of Teaching Safer Sex, which received the 2013 AASECT Book Award under his leadership.

Taverner is recognized for his extensive training of professionals in diverse fields, from education to healthcare, equipping them with the tools to address sexual health comprehensively. His workshops, such as “Unequal Partners” and “Making Sense of Abstinence,” have been instrumental in educating thousands of professionals nationwide.

His achievements in the field have been honored with multiple awards, including the “AASECT Founder’s Award” and the “Golden Apple Award” by the Association for Planned Parenthood Leaders in Education, affirming his pivotal role in advancing sexual education.
