About Alison Schrag

Alison Schrag is a dedicated Fish and Wildlife Technician working for the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) in New York City. Born and raised in Astoria, Queens, Alison developed a strong appreciation for nature during her childhood, spurred by numerous family trips to upstate New York and the Adirondacks.

After completing her primary education at P.S. 122 Mamie Fay and secondary education at Astoria High School, Alison pursued a Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science from the State University of New York (SUNY) College of Environmental Science and Forestry. She specialized in wildlife biology and conservation, gaining hands-on experience in species management and habitat preservation through extensive fieldwork and research.

Since joining the DEC in 2012, Alison has played a critical role in various conservation projects focused on urban wildlife management and habitat restoration. Her work includes conducting population surveys, tracking migration patterns, and analyzing environmental data to develop strategies that protect vulnerable species and restore critical habitats in New York’s diverse ecosystems.

Alison’s notable projects at the DEC include the Urban Wildlife Initiative, which addresses wildlife management in urban settings, and the Aquatic Habitat Restoration project, aimed at improving water quality and supporting native fish populations. She is also deeply involved in public education, leading workshops, school programs, and guided nature walks to raise awareness about the importance of environmental conservation.

Her commitment to her role is demonstrated through her participation in community-based conservation programs and her ongoing efforts to engage the public in sustainable environmental practices.
